ADMISSIONS

Saint Bernard Middle School admits candidates primarily on the basis of academic qualifications. Interested candidates are encouraged to attend our Fall Open House or Spring Preview programs and/or participate in our “Shadow Program” detailed below.

* * * Rolling Admission Policy * * *

Priority consideration for seats is given to candidates with active applications in the following order. An application is considered inactive if no further contact is made or information received after 45 days.

  1. Re-admission of current Middle school students.
  2. Out of state transfers from Catholic schools.
  3. Candidates testing on December 2, 2006.
  4. Candidates testing on March 9, 2007.

It is the policy of the middle school to fill available seats with qualified candidates as soon as a 3-step admission process is complete. No registrations are accepted until after the first scheduled exam date to offer all candidates an equal opportunity. Failure to complete the admission process in a timely manner will forfeit the priority privilege.

Candidates unable to take the entrance exam on December 2, 2006 may submit a REGISTRATION FORM, with deposit, to hold a seat, conditional to acceptance, anytime after December 2, 2006. Candidates electing this option must keep their application active by submitting transcripts and taking the entrance exam on March 9, 2007.

We understand that choosing a school for your child is an important decision. To assist you in that process Saint Bernard School invites your student to spend a day shadowing one of our students. The "Shadow Program” is for students considering Saint Bernard School for the 2007/2008 academic year. The "Shadow Program" is not an academic exercise. It’s an opportunity to discover things that could not be captured in a brochure or web site. Whatever your concerns, this program is designed to help you make this important decision. In a few hours or less, your heart will tell you where you should be.

It’s important to choose a school that will truly prepare you for what lies ahead. Saint Bernard students gain something few schools can offer: a Christian education that gives a student the rock-solid confidence they need to make it in the real world. Our dedicated faculty, excellent programs and nurturing community work together to educate the whole person – mind, body and spirit – something that separates us from the others!

ADMISSION STEPS

STEP ONE - ENTRANCE EXAM

All candidates are required to take a three-part standardized test in reading, language arts, and math (Pre-registration is required; exam fee $20). To register, candidates should complete an ENTRANCE EXAM APPLICATION and forward it to Admissions with the $20 testing fee. On exam day, students must arrive on time and are supplied with all necessary materials. No calculators are allowed. Students are given a small snack during a break. At the conclusion of the exam, candidates receive a folder containing all necessary admission forms and instructions.
The entrance exam is given at different times throughout the year. Scheduling generally follows our Fall Open House and Spring Preview programs. Specific information regarding dates and times can be found in NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS.

STEP TWO - COMPLETION OF ADMISSION FOLDER

In order to accurately assess the candidate's application for admission to the middle school, an admission package must be complete before the candidate can schedule his/her interview. It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to sign and forward to the candidate's current school the REQUEST FOR TRANSCRIPT (green form) and PRINCIPAL'S RECOMMENDATION (pink form) provided on exam day.

Once the required documents are on file, you will be notified by letter to contact the office to schedule an interview with the Middle School Principal. The length of time it takes to complete this step varies depending on the length of time it takes your current school to forward records. It takes approximately 3 weeks to receive test scores from Scholastic Testing Service. We recommend you sign and deliver the forms to your current school immediately as seats at the middle school are filled on a rolling admission basis (see policy defined above).

STEP THREE - INTERVIEW

The student candidate and parent(s)/guardian(s) meet with the Middle School Principal for approximately 45 minutes. The purpose of the interview is to further explore the candidate's desire to attend the middle school and provide an opportunity for questions and answers. Test scores and academic placement are discussed. This is particularly critical for new 8th grade students who may be eligible for placement in freshman courses.
You will be notified of a decision regarding your application for admission in a timely manner following your interview. Approved applicants are reminded that their seat is not guaranteed until a REGISTRATION FORM (beige form), with deposit, is received.
